Hosting and content delivery network

This website is hosted by Hostinger International Ltd., 61 Lordou Vironos Street, 6023 Larnaca, Cyprus. Hostinger also provides the content delivery network (CDN) that serves our pages faster.

With every request, your browser automatically sends technical data that the server stores in log files: IP address, date and time, the address requested, the referrer (the page you came from), browser and operating system. We need this data to deliver the website securely and reliably and to fend off attacks. The legal basis is our legitimate interest under Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. The host deletes the log files automatically after a short time; we don’t analyze them in a way that identifies you.

We have a data processing agreement with Hostinger under Art. 28 GDPR. Where Hostinger processes data outside the EU, it does so on the basis of the EU standard contractual clauses. More in Hostinger’s privacy policy: hostinger.com/privacy-policy.

No cookies, one local setting

Regular visits set no cookies. If you switch between light and dark mode, your browser stores that choice locally (local storage) so it’s still there next time. This information stays on your device and is never sent to us. The legal basis is § 25(2)(2) TDDDG, because storing it is necessary for the feature you asked for. You can delete it in your browser at any time.

Fonts

All fonts are served from our own server. No data is sent to Google Fonts or other font providers.

Analytics with PostHog

To understand which articles get read, we use PostHog (PostHog Inc., USA) with servers in the EU (Frankfurt, Germany). It’s set up to use no cookies and store nothing in your browser. To count visitors, PostHog creates an anonymous code (hash) on its servers from your IP address and browser details, and that code is regenerated every day. This tells us how many people visited on a given day, but we can’t recognize you on another day. It records the page you view, the page you came from, browser, operating system and device type, when you leave a page, plus three events: a newsletter sign-up, a click on a link to our Etsy shop and a click on a recommended article under “Keep reading”. There’s no recording of mouse movements or sessions. Your IP address is not stored.

The legal basis is our legitimate interest in privacy-friendly statistics under Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. We have a data processing agreement with PostHog; where data might reach the US, the EU standard contractual clauses apply. You can object, for example by blocking JavaScript for this site or using a tracking blocker. More: posthog.com/privacy.

Newsletter

If you subscribe to our newsletter, we process your email address to send it to you. We use Brevo (Brevo GmbH, Köpenicker Straße 126, 10179 Berlin, Germany).

We use double opt-in: after signing up, you get an email with a confirmation link, and you’re only subscribed once you click it. That way nobody can sign up with someone else’s address. Brevo stores the time of sign-up and confirmation and your IP address so we can prove your consent.

Brevo records whether a newsletter was opened and which links were clicked. These statistics help us make the newsletter better.

The legal basis is your consent under Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR. You can withdraw it at any time via the unsubscribe link in every newsletter or by emailing us. After you unsubscribe, we remove your address from the mailing list. We have a data processing agreement with Brevo. More: brevo.com/legal/privacypolicy.

Contact by email

If you write to us, we process your message and contact details to reply. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (for requests about a contract) or Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (our interest in answering requests). We delete the message once it’s dealt with and no retention obligation applies.

We link to other websites, for example our Etsy shop, Instagram or BoardGameGeek. These sites aren’t embedded: data is only sent to the respective provider once you click a link. Their privacy policy applies from then on.

Editor area

The /admin/ area is only for our editors. When signing in with GitHub, we set a short-lived, technically necessary cookie to prevent misuse. It doesn’t affect visitors of the website.

Your rights

You have the right of access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 21). You can withdraw consent at any time with effect for the future. Just send us an email.

You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, for example the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, which is responsible for us.
